Former India National Cricket Team left-arm pacer and Gujarat Titans (GT) head coach Ashish Nehra has said that the wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is a big asset for Team India and people will have to be a little patient with him in white-ball cricket.

The 24-year-old Rishabh Pant, who is India’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman across all three formats, has been enormously successful in Test cricket. However, he has not been able to replicate a similar kind of success in limited-overs cricket and he has got mediocre numbers in T20Is and ODIs.

Meanwhile, former India pacer Ashish Nehra said that Pant is a highly talented cricketer and he has performed well in difficult conditions for India.

“Rishabh Pant, being the player he is, we don’t need to discuss what kind of a talent he is. He has shown that in difficult conditions. So, we have to be a little patient, keep our patience with him,” said Nehra in a select media interaction facilitated recently by Sony Sports Network.

Pant was given an opportunity to open the innings with Rohit Sharma in the recently concluded three-match T20I series against England in the absence of KL Rahul. Nehra talked about India’s move to promote Pant in the batting order and said:

“You know what a guy like Pant can do in the first six overs, and with the field restriction, in the future, with more experience, Rishabh Pant is an all-rounder, he’s a big asset for the Indian team in any format.”

The way he plays, you know, it’s very difficult to get the consistency – Ashish Nehra

Pant has always been criticised for the lack of consistency in his batting. He recently got out for a 5-ball duck in the second ODI against England at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London when India needed him the most after the openers got out early on in the innings.

Meanwhile, former India pacer Nehra said that Pant’s aggressive style of batting makes it difficult for him to bring consistency in his batting.

“It’s very difficult to keep performing. Rishabh Pant, what kind of player is he? When it comes to that, we want him to score runs and to score at that strike rate in every format. And that much consistency will only come with time because the kind of player he is, the way he plays, you know, it’s very difficult to get the consistency,” he said.
