Rishabh Pant, a dashing left-hander, is undoubtedly India’s finest Test hitter right now, according to former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer.

In the recently ended T20I series against the Proteas, the 24-year-old struggled, hitting only 57 runs in the four completed matches. But once he was back in the whites, Rishabh Pant demonstrated why he is now among the most dangerous hitters in the world.

Wasim Jaffer Acknowledges Rishabh Pant As India’s Best Test Batter

On Day 1 of the Birmingham Test against England, India was in trouble at 98/5. The visitors are now in control thanks to Pant’s spectacular 146 (111) counterattacking knock.

Here is what Jaffer had to say about Pant’s outstanding innings in his interview with ESPNCricinfo

“(On whether Pant is India’s best Test batter at the moment) Yes definitely. The way he has played some knocks of late, you can definitely call him India’s best Test batter at the moment.”

Wasim Jaffer praised Ravindra Jadeja’s tenacity on the opposite end in addition to Pant’s amazing performance. The 33-year-form old’s was questioned as well following a disappointing IPL season.

Jadeja appeared to be at ease despite the environment being favourable for swing bowling. He helped Rishabh Pant play his natural game by holding one end with some good hitting and the occasional boundaries. A record 222 runs were scored by the pair for the sixth wicket.

Jaffer thinks Pant’s innings will rank among his finest in Tests if India were to go on to win the match. He stated:

“(On whether Pant’s knock has put India ahead in the game) Yes. Not only his knock but also the partnership with Ravindra Jadeja was incredible. If India wins this Test, I think it will be one of Pant’s best Test innings.”

India will be pleased that they finished the first day of play at Birmingham on 338/7 after losing half of their team for less than 100 runs. With Mohammed Shami (0 off 11 balls) and Jadeja (83 off 163 balls) at the crease to begin Day 2, they will now try to advance towards the 375-run threshold.
