IND vs ENG: Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan Need 43 Runs To Become 3rd Most Successful ODI Opening Pair Of All-time

India National Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma and veteran left-handed opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan performed brilliantly for India in the first ODI of the three-match ODI series against England at the Kennington Oval in London on Tuesday.

Chasing the small target of 111-run against Jos Buttler-led England, Rohit and Dhawan put up an unbeaten 114-run partnership and India won by 10 wickets.

Rohit was the aggressor in the partnership as he smashed 76* runs off 58 balls, including 6 fours and 5 sixes. Dhawan, on the other hand, scored 31* runs off 54 balls, including 4 fours.

The partnership between Rohit and Dhawan was their 18th century partnership in ODIs and they also crossed the 5,000-run mark in partnership in ODIs to become only the fourth opening pair to achieve this milestone.

Overall, Rohit and Dhawan have scored 5108 runs as an opening pair in just 112 innings. They have together scored runs at an amazing average of 46.43, including 18-century stands, with their best partnership being 210 runs, which came in 2018 against Pakistan.

The second match of the three-match ODI series between Jos Buttler-led England National Cricket Team and Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team will be played at the Lord’s Cricket Ground, London on Thursday.

Rohit and Dhawan are currently perched at No. 4 in the all-time list of opening pairs with the most runs and in the second ODI, they will have an opportunity to be among the top three most successful ODI opening pairs.

The most successful opening pair in ODIs is of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar, who have scored 6609 runs in 136 innings. Australian Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden are the second most successful ODI opening duo with 5,372 runs in 114 innings. The No.3 on the list are West Indies’ Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes, who have scored 5150 runs as an opening pair in 102 innings.

If India captain Rohit and Dhawan, who will be captaining India in the West Indies ODIs, manage to score 43 runs in the Lord’s ODI against England they will surpass the West Indies duo of Gordon Greenidge-Desmond Haynes and become the third most successful opening pair in the history of ODI cricket.
