Star India National Cricket Team middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav has said that a player will always have to be two steps ahead of the opposition in order to become successful.

Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team will lock horns with Jos Buttler-led England National Cricket Team in the third and final match of the ODI series at Old Trafford, Manchester. The series is currently levelled at 1-1.

Speaking ahead of the match at a press conference, Suryakumar Yadav, who is a key member of the Indian team in limited-overs cricket, said that his mindset remains the same across the two white-ball formats and he tries to play his natural aggressive game.

“My mindset is the same in one-day cricket, I try to bat the same way I do in T20 cricket. Playing your natural game is very important. There is also an advantage in ODIs as there are five fielders inside the circle.

“So your strokes and intent are always about scoring runs. So I have the same mindset. Even if wickets fall I try to keep the scoreboard ticking to make sure that we don’t fall short of runs if I need to finish the game in the last 10-15 overs,” Suryakumar said on Saturday (July 16), ahead of the final ODI against England in Manchester.

Suryakumar Yadav said that he started playing cricket by watching the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar and they will continue to be his idols.

However, he added that there has been a drastic change in cricket and nowadays the bowlers plan a lot of things so staying two steps ahead of them has become mandatory to succeed.

“I started playing by watching them (Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar), and they are our inspiration and will continue to be so. But the way cricket is going forward, and the way your opposition nowadays makes plans, you will have to be two steps ahead of them if you want to be successful at this level. So, I have assessed my game and figured out where should I score my runs so that I am two steps ahead of the bowler. That’s it, that’s how I have played, only that I have added some shots in my armoury,” he added.

Suryakumar Yadav smashed his maiden T20I century in the third T20I against England at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham to become only the 5th Indian batter to smash a century in T20Is. He scored 117 runs off 55 balls, including 14 fours and 6 sixes. After his sensational innings, he received massive praise from all around the world from cricket fans and experts.

While talking about getting a truckload of praises, Suryakumar said that it motivates him to do well in the upcoming games.

“It’s good, you get the motivation to do well. I scored a hundred and obviously, I was happy with the personal milestone. But at the same time there was an opportunity there to get the win for the team. What I could have done better there, that was the important thing for me to realise there. But I get such praises, it feels good, I get the motivation to do even better going forward,” he said.
