Indian wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik was surprised after hearing about the new selection committee to be appointed by BCCI. However, Karthik thinks that since their term was already coming to a conclusion, the transition was inevitable.

After India’s loss at the world cup, it was all but certain that the BCCI would have to make some severe, unpopular decisions. India returned empty-handed from yet another ICC event, as the tournament started off with a bang but concluded with a whimper.

The BCCI promptly issued an invitation for new applicants for the selection committee, effectively firing the one currently headed by Chetan Sharma, following India’s semifinal loss to England in the championship event.

Opportunities For The New Selectors Coming In: Dinesh Karthik

Although it may not come as a surprise to many, world cup participant and Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik were unprepared for the development.

“Very interesting development,” Karthik said on Cricbuzz. “I think none of us saw it coming. It is also an opportunity for the new selectors coming in and we have to see how things unfold.”

New Selectors Have Some Strong Decisions To Take: Dinesh Karthik

However, Karthik does not like the term “sack” to characterize the departure of the selecting committee. He believes that change was unavoidable because their term was already coming to an end.

Then, he gave selectors credit for the challenging task of choosing a squad of 15 players from a large pool, and he forecast that the new group will need to make some decisive choices.

“I know this word ‘sack’ was used a lot, but I think their term was coming to an end as well. It is a tough job. Picking 15 players from a set of 40-45 players who are all good enough to represent the country it’s not going to be easy. Credit to them. They have done a good job. The new selectors have some strong decisions to take,” Karthik said.

The Indian cricket team’s transitional phase has also begun with the white-ball tour of New Zealand, where numerous young players and fringe players have been given opportunities. The days of having one person in charge of all three teams (Test, ODI, and T20I) are now history as there are talks of selecting different captains for each format.
