India vs New Zealand’s 1st T20I match was abandoned due to rain. The Selection Panel has named a different squad for the T20I Series where a lot of senior players are rested. Shubman Gill has a golden chance to make a case for himself by playing a couple of match-winning knocks.
The Men in Blue would be hoping that they continue their winning run in New Zealand. Last time, they won the T20I Series in 2020 by 5-0 which was quite a feat. The decision to make Hardik Pandya Captain can be a sign that the selection panel has moved on from Rohit Sharma.
Ravi Shastri on Shubman Gill
Ravi Shastri was having a discussion on Prime Video and was asked about Shubman Gill. “Shubman Gill has been around a long time. He came here, won the under-19 World Cup with Prithvi Shaw, who was the captain. Everyone knows the talent he has, amazing talent, but what they are looking for is consistency,” said Ravi Shastri.
“He has threatened, he has promised, but I think the time has just about come now where he has understood his own game and that maturity will help him get the consistency,” he added.
Crucial Series for Shubman Gill
The right-handed batter has shown great temperament. He was a part of the West Indies & Zimbabwe tour where he scored runs and now has started banging the door of the Indian Cricket Team. It won’t be wrong to say that the 22-year-old batter has got all the shots to dismantle the opponent.
Shubman though will have to work on his strike rate as his game is suited to red-ball cricket and 50-over format. In T20Is the team would rely on him to play anchor’s knock for the team. It looks like the selection panel is looking at him as a 3-format player. It would be interesting to see how the batter fares in the remaining two T20Is as he would be well aware of the fact that he won’t get this chance often.
