After winning the first Test, India would be keen to continue that winning momentum and register their first-ever series win in South Africa. India put in a dominant performance in the first Test. KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal ensured India start the series on a bright note.

The duo put on a dominant batting performance on the first day of the Test match as they added 117 runs for the first wicket. KL Rahul went on to score his maiden Test hundred in South Africa. Mayank Agarwal also made a valuable 60 off 123 balls. Virat Kohli (35 off 94) and Ajinkya Rahane’s (48 off 102) vital cameos helped India post 327 in the first innings.

India’s bowling was even better. Mohammed Shami exhibited a brilliant display of fast bowling. Jasprit Bumrah twisted his ankle and bowled only 7 overs in the second innings. However, the likes of Siraj and Shardul Thakur didn’t let India miss Bumrah a lot. Shami ended up picking five wickets, while Siraj and Thakur picked 3 wickets combined. South Africa could only manage to score 197 runs in the second innings, giving India a handy lead of 197 runs.

South Africa bowled at great areas and made great use of the conditions when India came out to bat in their second innings. Rabada and Jansen picked four wickets each as they ran through India’s batting unit.

Wickets fell continuously at regular intervals and India were bundled out for just 174 runs in their second innings. Rishabh Pant top-scored for India with a run-a-ball 34. Despite scoring a low total, India managed to set a huge target of 304 runs for South Africa to chase down.

Jasprit Bumrah came back to bowl and ran through South Africa’s top-order along with Mohammed Shami. The duo picked three wickets each and helped India bowl out South Africa for just 191 runs in the final innings. India, as a result, won the first Test by 113 runs.

India have taken a 1-0 lead in the series and would be keen to register their first-ever Test series win in South Africa. The only concern they have right now is India’s middle-order. The likes of Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Ajinkya Rahane need to play the big knocks with the bat. If India don’t get runs from the openers, they might get into trouble at Johannesburg. Other than that, you don’t expect India to worry too much.

As for South Africa, they need to bat well to save this Test series. Quinton de Kock won’t be playing further in the series and this could dent their hopes of winning the next two Tests. It will be interesting to what changes they make ahead of the second Test of the series.
