India squares up against South Africa in the second ODI on Friday at Boland Park in Paarl. KL Rahul and Co. didn’t make an ideal start to the series as they lost the first ODI by 31 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar made a decent start with the ball. Bumrah sent the in-form Janneman Malan (6 off 10) back to the hut early in the fifth over of the first innings.

India kept the pressure on the opposition and didn’t give them easy runs. Ashwin, later, cleaned up Quinton de Kock, while Markram ran himself out to leave South Africa in trouble at 68 for 3. India, at the stage, was dominating.

Rassie van der Dussen then joined Temba Bavuma and led South Africa’s recovery. The duo started off cautiously before switching gears. The duo put on a record 204-run partnership for the fourth wicket and batted together for 30 overs.

Bavuma went on to score 110 off 143, while Rassie van der Dussen remained unbeaten on 129 off 96 deliveries, Thanks to those valuable contributions, South Africa managed to score 296 runs in the first innings.

India, in pursuit of the score, made a steady start with the bat. Shikhar Dhawan scored at a quick rate and denied South Africa to put pressure early on. However, Markram then got the wicket of KL Rahul to help South Africa get the first breakthrough in the sixth over of the innings.

The wicket, however, didn’t have any effect on Shikhar Dhawan, who kept sending the bad balls to the boundary ropes. He stitched a valuable 92-run partnership with Virat Kohli to put India in complete control of the chase. However, once they got out, the match slipped from India’s hands very quickly.

Shikhar Dhawan was the second one to depart after scoring 79 off 84 balls. Virat Kohli got out three overs later after scoring a vital half-century. From 138 for 2, India, very soon, slipped to 188 for 6. Shardul Thakur’s fifty helped India play the complete fifty overs but they still fell 31 runs short of the target in the end.
