Indian all-rounder Axar Patel revealed his conversation with Avesh Khan in the penultimate over of the chase during the second ODI match against West Indies on Sunday.

Half-centuries from Shreyas Iyer (63), Sanju Samson (54) and Axar Patel helped India win by two wickets and seal the series 2-0.

Shreyas and Samson build India’s innings with their 99-run stand before Alzarri Joseph trapped India No.3 for leg before wicket. After reaching his maiden half-century in the 38th over, Samson was involved in a horrible run-out in the very next over.

It was just time before Axar stormed in the slog overs to announce his return to ODI cricket in this series after five years.

The southpaw hit three fours and five sixes, batting at a strike rate of 182.86, to snatch the game from the hands of the hosts with two balls to spare.

We just focused on our intent: Axar Patel

Axar smashed Romario Shepherd’s three boundaries in the 47th over. He didn’t risk playing the big shots for the next two overs of Joseph and Jayden Seales but finished the game with a six in the final over off Kyle Mayers.

When I was batting in the 49th over, Avesh (Khan) Bhai had an idea and told me, ‘Look, their three main bowlers have finished their quota of 10 overs.’ So I played that over out without any risks as I knew the final over would be bowled by a part-timer. He [Kyle Mayers] missed his length and I took advantage of it,” Axar told Yuzvendra Chahal on Chahal TV.

“We just focused on our intent and didn’t focus too much on the equation or the pitch. We just needed to take one risk per over and that’s what we kept on doing,” he added.

India will play the final ODI against West Indies on Wednesday (July 27) at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad.
