Scott Styris thinks Shreyas Iyer has a chance to lead Team India in the future if he can overcome his problems with short-pitched bowling.

A while back, Shreyas was one of the front-runners to take the helm of the Indian squad in the future. He even lost his spot in India’s first-string white-ball sides as a result of the shoulder injury he sustained last year and his struggles with the short ball.

During a conversation on Sports 18, Scott Styris was questioned about if Shreyas Iyer’s performance in the next West Indies series will determine his fate or if he would receive further opportunities. He answered:

“Without a doubt, Shreyas Iyer’s leadership skills are what I like most about him. He could very well lead India as captain, in my opinion. Because of this, I hope he joins this squad and is given more and more possibilities.”

“I do not like that Shreyas Iyer is no longer a closely-kept secret. He struggles with short balls. Because I doubt he has discovered a solution, I believe you will see many team teams attacking him with their fast bowlers, hit him at the body with bouncers, or under the armpit if you choose.”

Scott Styris stated that Shreyas should be given as many opportunities as possible, but if he does not perform, the Indian team may have to look elsewhere for a player. The ex-cricketer and analyst went on to explain:

“If he is capable of doing that, I believe he would be one of the first people you list on that Indian side. I genuinely admire all of his talents, but until then, you just need to give him chance; if he does not succeed, you will need to find someone else who can. He is, nonetheless, incredibly skilled.

The first One-Day International (ODI) between India and the West Indies will take place tomorrow (July 22) at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain.
