Aakash Chopra Feels Kolkata Knight Riders Will Have To "Shop For Captain" During The IPL 2022 Auction

Aakash Chopra feels that Kolkata Knight Riders will have to shop for the captain during the IPL 2022 auction. The cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra also feels that none of the retained players of KKR can become the captain of the side.

Kolkata Knight Riders have retained 4 players in their squad for the next season. The two-time IPL champions retained Andre Russell for Rs. 12 crore, Varun Chakravarthy and Venkatesh Iyer for Rs. 8 crore each, and Sunil Narine for Rs. 6 crore.

Venkatesh Iyer, Varun Chakravarthy, Andre Russell And Sunil Narine Cannot Lead KKR: Aakash Chopra

While speaking on his YouTube channel, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra said that Kolkata Knight Riders will have to shop for a captain during IPL 2022 auction as none of their 4 retained players can handle captaincy of the side.

“KKR have retained Venkatesh Iyer, Varun Chakravarthy, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine. None of them can become the captain. This is the sad reality that you would still have to shop for the captain,” Aakash Chopra said.

The former India opener also feels that KKR will not buy back Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik in the squad. Eoin Morgan led the team in IPL 2021 and IPL 2020, while Dinesh Karthik was the KKR skipper prior to that.

“You had made Eoin Morgan the captain and I don’t think they will even buy back Eoin Morgan, because the sort of performance he has given – KKR was playing with almost 10 players, I understand captain has a lot of value but contribution with the bat is necessary”.

“Dinesh Karthik has been this team’s captain but they won’t be thinking about Dinesh Karthik as a captain now or going ahead, because as good a player he is, age is not on his side,” Aakash Chopra added.

Kolkata Knight Riders finished as runners-up in the last season, losing the final to Chennai Super Kings. Meanwhile, the IPL 2022 auction will take place on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. So far, the 10 franchises have picked a total of 33 players in their squads.
