Veteran Indian pacer Umesh Yadav won the ‘Player of the Match’ award in the first match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 that was played between Ravindra Jadeja-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday, March 26.

Kolkata Knight Riders won the first match of the Indian Premier League 2022 in a dominant style against Chennai Super Kings by 6 wickets.

Meanwhile, Umesh Yadav, who was part of KKR’s 2014 IPL triumph, was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction for INR 2 crore.

Before the Indian Premier League 2022 opening encounter against Chennai Super Kings, Umesh Yadav in an interview had said that he is confident that he will deliver a good performance in the 15th edition of the tournament and he exactly did that in the first game.

Umesh Yadav dismissed opener Ruturaj Gaikwad for a duck in the first over and then he dismissed Devon Conway and overall he gave away just 20 runs in his 4-over quota.

Wickets in the powerplay is important – Umesh Yadav

During the post-match presentation, Umesh Yadav said that picking wickets in the powerplay was important. He asserted:

“Wickets in the powerplay is important. Team’s role is what I carried out today. Usually I’ve been focusing on my rhythm. I’m thankful to my trainers for keeping me in shape.”

Also, after the end of Chennai Super Kings’ innings, Umesh Yadav had said that he was happy to pick wickets in the powerplay overs. He elaborated:

“It’s a fresh wicket and the ball is gripping and there is bounce and swing as well, there is help for pace and spin as well. Last year I just played only 2 games and always feels nice to play and do well for the team. Got wickets in the powerplay, so I am very happy. If you look at my IPL record, I have the capability to take wickets in the powerplay and I also swing the new ball as well and as a fast bowler, I would love to lead the team and pick as many wickets in the powerplay.”
