Mumbai Indians (MI) snuffed out Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) faint hopes of making the cut in the IPL 2022 playoffs after a five-wicket win on Thursday at the Wankhede stadium.

After winning the toss, skipper Rohit Sharma opted to field first as left-arm pacer Daniel Sams ran through CSK’s top-order, claiming the wickets of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, and Moeen.

CSK IPL 2022 campaign is all but over

CSK were reeling at 17/4 at the start of the fifth over and things went from bad to worse as they lost the wickets of Ambati Rayudu (10) and Shivam Dubey (10) in the space of two overs.

It was left to veteran players MS Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo to bail CSK out from an embarrassing low score. The duo put 39 runs in their alliance before Bravo perished in the 13th over.

Dhoni remained unbeaten on 36 off 33, plundering four boundaries and a couple of sixes, as CSK were bowled out for 97 in 16 overs.

Despite a mini-collapse in the batting order, MI managed to hold their nerves and see the paltry score with 31 balls to spare.

CSK lost eight of 12 matches in the tournament, thus ending their marginal hopes of qualifying for the knockout stage.

We’ve been through enough of these seasons to know that: Stephen Fleming

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming  said they won’t stress enough on a disappointing campaign but aim to improve on certain areas in the remaining inconsequential matches of the league stage.

What I can say is there’s not much margin between having a great season and a not so great season. We’ve been through enough of these seasons to know that. We’re not going to tune too much over, but we do need to improve in some areas,” Fleming said in the post-match presentation.

MI had already bowed out of the tournament with nine losses, the most for the successful IPL team in one season.

CSK will play their next game against Gujarat Titans on Sunday (May 15) while MI will face Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 17.
