Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Hardik Pandya was disappointed with the batting effort as his team lost to Mumbai Indians (MI) by 5 runs at the Brabourne Stadium. It is the first instance of GT losing while batting second.

After restricting MI to 177, Gujarat was set up perfectly by the openers. Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha put on 106 runs for the first wicket. Both scored fifties but were dismissed in the same over by Murugan Ashwin.

Soon after, there were two avoidable run-outs of Hardik himself and Rahul Tewatia which hurt GT. Needing 9 runs from the final over, Daniel Sams bowled a brilliant over where he conceded just 3 runs and took MI to their second victory of the season.

On any day, we’d take 9 off the last over. The two run-outs cost us the game. I think batters let us down. In T20s, you can’t lose back-to-back games. No blame games as we have cleared such games. We have made rookie mistakes which cost us this one.”

We played good cricket for 19.2 overs in our innings, one or two hits would have made a difference. We should not have let it come down to the last over. I think bowlers did a fantastic job by putting pressure and pulling it back to 170, as they were on the way to 200,” Hardik said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Despite the loss, GT remains in the top spot with 8 wins in 11 matches. However, they will be keen to break this losing streak heading into the playoffs, for which they are all set to qualify. As for Mumbai, it is a victory they will take heart from and take into their remaining matches.

Final scores:

MI – 177/6 in 20 overs
GT – 172/5 in 20 overs
