On Saturday, Ambati Rayudu, the 36-year-old Chennai Super Kings batsman, caused a sensation by deleting a tweet in which he stated that IPL 2022 will be his final season.

Rayudu in his tweet thanked both Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, the two franchises he has played for in the Indian Premier League.

However, after thirty minutes, that tweet was removed. The Chennai Super Kings management spoke with Rayudu, who later took down the tweet, according to ESPNcricinfo.

Former teammates and admirers paid tribute to Rayudu shortly after he tweeted his remark. Irfan Pathan, a former India fast bowler, said he’d always “admired” Rayudu’s batting and “energy” on the field.

Rayudu has been a key member of the Super Kings, who have been among the worst performers this season despite being the defending champions. After collecting one of their lowest scores and suffering one of their worst defeats in the IPL, Super Kings became the second club to drop out of the playoff chase on Thursday.

Despite being a powerhouse in the IPL, MS Dhoni’s team has had a rocky season, with Ravindra Jadeja stepping down as captain halfway through the league and then leaving the tournament this week with a bruised rib.

This isn’t the first time Rayudu has reversed a retirement decision. After being overlooked for the 2019 ODI World Cup, he announced his retirement from all cricket in 2019 but later reversed his decision to return to regional and IPL cricket.

Rayudu is the second-most successful IPL cricketer with five trophies and is among the top ten most experienced IPL cricketers. Only Rohit Sharma has more (six). His five IPL titles are tied for second-most all-time (with Kieron Pollard).

Rayudu won the IPL titles in 2013, 2015, and 2017 with Mumbai, and then in 2018 and 2021 with his current side, Super Kings, under Rohit. Rayudu had been absent for the first two years due to his involvement with the ICL.
