IPL 2022 Auction: 3 Teams Which Can Target Shreyas Iyer

Delhi Capitals, the runners-up of IPL 2020, haven’t retained Shreyas Iyer for next year’s edition of IPL. Delhi Capital’s former skipper has been released by Delhi Capitals. Iyer took over the captaincy from Gautam Gambhir midway during the 2018 edition of IPL. Under his leadership, Delhi Capitals went on to reach the playoffs for the next two consecutive seasons.

Apart from his leadership skills, Iyer scored heavily for Delhi Capitals at number three for the last 3 seasons. However, Delhi Capitals has opted to persist with Rishabh Pant as captain for next season. Ahead of the Mega Auctions is scheduled to be held next year, Iyer will find himself in the auction pool. On that note, here’s a look at three teams that can target him in the Mega Auction.

1. Royal Challengers Bangalore 

Everybody is quite aware of the fact that Virat Kohli won’t be leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore from next year. The franchise is looking for a candidate to lead the team well and help them lift their first-ever IPL title. AB de Villiers- the backbone of RCB, has also announced his retirement from all formats of cricket. Royal Challengers Bangalore, clearly has a lot of areas to address at the moment. 

Perhaps, the addition of someone like Shreyas Iyer can help them get rid of a lot of their worries. Iyer could be a potential candidate to lead the team and will strengthen RCB’s middle-order. RCB hadn’t have a designated number three batsman in the last couple of years. 

They have tried different players at the number three position but nothing seemed to have worked for them. Shreyas Iyer is an ideal candidate to bat at number three and holds a great amount of experience to lead the side from the front. 

2. Chennai Super Kings

There are quite a few reasons to believe that Chennai Super Kings would also be eying Shreyas Iyer in the Mega Auctions. For many years, Suresh Raina was CSK’s backbone in the batting unit. He has been CSK’s most prolific batsman but you have to admit that he is no longer the batsman that he used to be. 

He struggled to make an impact in the 2021 edition of the tournament. CSK would be looking for his replacement and Shreyas Iyer is someone who, perhaps, can carry forward his legacy. Iyer isn’t as destructive as Suresh Raina but can play a great role in the middle-order. Also, with MS Dhoni likely to hang his boots in some time, CSK could look at Shreyas Iyer to lead the team in the future.

3. Punjab Kings

KL Rahul has parted with Punjab Kings ahead of the next season of IPL. It’s a massive blow for them as the Indian opener was an integral part of Punjab’s team. 

Besides his role as a captain, he was the franchise’s highest run-scorer for the last three years, and finding his replacement would be a tough ask. Nevertheless, all that is now a thing of the past, and Punjab would be actively looking for a new skipper. 

Among the Indian players who are likely to be in the Auction Pool, Shreyas Iyer can be a wise pick. Iyer has a successful record as a captain for Delhi Capitals and certainly has the potential to turn Punjab’s fortune in IPL.
