India pacer Mohammad Shami was one of the top-tier buys at the recent Indian Premier League- IPL 2022 auction as the right-handed bowler got picked by Gujarat Titans for a price of Rs 6.25 crores. He had previously played from IPL 2019 to IPL 2021 for Punjab Kings and had also featured for Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders previously in the tournament.

In all, Shami had picked 79 wickets in as many matches with an economy of 8.62 and best bowling figures of 3/15. Shami was not retained by the Punjab Kings ahead of the IPL 2022 auction, as they only kept Mayank Agarwal and Arshdeep Singh in their kitty and have rebuilt their entire squad.

Shami was bought by Gujarat Titans for INR 6.25 crores in the IPL 2022 mega auction. He will have Lockie Ferguson, Alzarri Joseph, Varun Aaron, Pradeep Sangwan, and Dominic Drakes for the company in the pace bowling unit at his new franchise is based out of Ahmedabad.

Talking about his new franchise to ANI, Shami said: “I am very happy and looking forward to the team as soon as possible. Will try to give 100 percent to this franchise and get the best results possible. I always want to leave a mark behind for the youngsters to follow. So, I will be frank with all the young players in the squad to motivate them to perform better for the team. These youngsters will be performing well and it will be a good sign for our country.”

Mohammad Shami is currently on rest as he featured in all three Test matches in South Africa and since then BCCI has managed his workload by not picking him for the three ODIs which followed the Test matches in South Africa.

He was also not picked for the white-ball six matches against West Indies, along with Jasprit Bumrah. Therefore, he has missed the chance to play under the captaincy of new limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma. Sharma took over from Virat Kohli in T20Is during the home T20I series against New Zealand which India won 3-0 and now in his first ODI series as full-time India captain, white-washed West Indies 3-0 in Ahmedabad.

Shami opined on Rohit Sharma and said: “Rohit no doubt is a good captain. He has won many IPL seasons and is a great leader. He has been really supportive to me, as we both have been playing for a long time now.”
