Chennai Super Kings bought 21 players in the IPL 2022 mega auction. While it retained much of its core, the side failed to get back Faf du Plessis and did not show any interest in buying back Suresh Raina who ultimately went unsold in the auction. Dwayne Bravo, Ambati Rayudu, Robin Uthappa, Deepak Chahar, Mitchell Santner, and Shivam Dube were some of the popular players bought by CSK. Deepak Chahar was their costliest player at 14 crores.

Chennai Super Kings are one of the most successful teams in the IPL. They won the trophy four times in IPL 2010, IPL 2011, IPL 2018, and IPL 2021. The franchise has also reached the playoffs 11 times out of 12 seasons. CSK also ended up as runners-up in 5 seasons in IPL 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2019.

Meanwhile, the BCCI announced the two groups ahead of IPL 2022. Chennai Super Kings along with SRH, RCB, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Lions are placed in group B. Each team in this group will play against each other twice in the upcoming season.

Choosing the seven Indian players in the playing Xi will be a tough task for the franchise given there are many matchwinners in the side. Age and the fitness of the players will also be a key consideration for the franchise as they have many players above the age of 35. In this article, we will look at CSK’s probable seven Indian players in the playing XI.

Dhoni will perhaps play his last IPL season in IPL 2022. After IPL 2021 he spoke about playing his last IPL game in front of Indian fans before announcing his retirement from the tournament. His batting skills are on the wan in recent times, however, it is his acumen as a captain that helped CSK to win their fourth IPL title last year. He would like to end his career with one more IPL title to his name.

Ruturaj Gaikwad

The franchise invested a lot of time in Ruturaj. It yielded immediate results as he ended as the top run-getter in the IPL last season. He will hold on top his position at the top order. He has found the going tough at the international level. He would like to make another IPL season count in order to stake a claim for a longer run at the international level.

With no Faf du Plessis, CSK might look at Robin Uthappa as Gaikwad’s partner and the second opener in the playing XI. In the limited opportunities that he got in IPL 2021, Uthappa proved his worth in gold. He spoke about coming back to CSK and the security the franchise provides to its players. He might be given a longer rope this year by the franchise.

Ambati Rayudu

Rayudu can also open or slot in the middle-order for CSK. Dhoni played him as an opener in 2018 which turned around his IPL career for the better. It marked his return into the Indian team briefly as he was ignored for the 2019 World Cup. However, Rayudu still has the mettle in him to succeed at the IPL level. It will be interesting to see how Dhoni uses him in the batting order.

Ravindra Jadeja

Jadeja is potentially the next CSK skipper. He will succeed MS Dhoni probably in the middle of the season as per reports. He was retained by the franchise for 16 crores as opposed to 12 crores paid to MSD. Jadeja will bata at number six or seven and play the finishing role with Dhoni expected to bat up the order at number four. His more fou overs are a given in every game.

Hangargekar recently was involved in an age-fudging case with the BCCI willing him not to punish due to the lack of proper evidence. He is a medium pacer and produced the good with the bat in the U-19 World Cup. Under Dhoni and Jadeja, he might be groomed to become one of the matchwinners in the near future for India.

Deepak Chahar

Chahar was ruled out of the series against Sri Lanka with a hamstring injury. There are also reports that he might miss the IPL but nothing is confirmed as yet. If he plays, he will be the seventh Indian player in the CSK playing XI. Chahar will lead the bowling attack given his ability to swing the ball. His recent batting form is also good and his side might ned his power with the willow in a few games.
