New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips issued an explanation to his fans for his derailment in joining the Surisers Hyderabad (SRH) camp for IPL 2022. A total of 12 players from New Zealand will be playing in the IPL 2022 with the likes of Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne and Devon Conway started in the playing XI of their respective franchises in the four matches so far.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson will continue to lead Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2022. Williamson and other New Zealand players have already reached India to play in the cash-rich league but Phillips is missing from the SRH camp.

Neither Sunrisers Hyderabad nor Williamson issued any update on the middle-order batter’s absence from the squad which led to questions on his availability. The Auckland wicketkeeper-batter broke the silence and confirmed that he tested positive for COVID-19.

“For those who keep asking- I am stuck in NZ due to a positive PCR travel test. I will be joining SRH as soon as I can,” Phillips wrote in the caption of one of his Instagram stories.

Phillips played three matches for Rajasthan Royals last year after he was roped in as a replacement for Jos Buttler in the second phase of IPL 2021 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Phillips could just score 20 runs in three innings at a dismal average of 13.

Phillips was sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for his base price of INR 1.5 crore during the IPL 2022 auction. SRH has a total of 23 players in their squad with eight overseas slots. South Africa batter Aiden Markram and West Indies bowling all-rounder Romario Shepherd can be crucial in Kane Williamson’s side in the middle-order.

SRH will play their first match of IPL 2022 against Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday (March 29) at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
