Former Indian player Sunil Gavaskar opined Chennai Super Kings iconic skipper MS Dhoni will take up the mentor role for the four-time IPL winners next season.

CSK has now lost nine of 13 matches after the seven-wicket defeat to Gujarat Titans on Sunday (May 15) at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.

Will MS Dhoni continue playing for CSK after IPL 2022?

MS Dhoni and his men are already out of contention for the IPL 2022 playoffs race along with rivals Mumbai Indians.

Since Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020, the one question that arises at the business end of every season is – Will this be his last IPL as a player?

In a sudden move, Dhoni decided to hand over the captaincy reins to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja just a couple of days before the start of the IPL 2022.

The decision backfired for both the franchise and the new captain as CSK lost six of their eight matches.

Jadeja scored 116 runs in 10 innings at 19.33 and returned five wickets with the ball at an economy rate of 7.52.

The queer thing was the star all-rounder dropped a few catches in the tournament given the impression of his acrobatic fielding skills.

After feeling the pressure, Jadeja gave back the captaincy duties to Dhoni ahead of their clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

If MS Dhoni wasn’t keen on continuing, he would not have taken the captaincy back: Sunil Gavaskar

Gavaskar believes Dhoni would continue his association with CSK as a mentor role based on his return to the captaincy of the side.

I think he (Dhoni) said, ‘You will definitely see me in yellow’. Whether it’s a player uniform or another yellow, it remains to be seen. I do believe he will be around as a mentor.

“If he wasn’t keen on continuing, he would not have taken the captaincy back,” Gavaskar told Star Sports after CSK’s loss to the Titans on Sunday.

“Sometimes you learn more from failures than from success. Maybe at that point in time with two more matches before Jadeja’s unfortunate injury, Dhoni would have given Jadeja a couple of matches to get that sort of experience.

“I do believe he will be back in yellow for sure. No question about that,” he further said.

CSK will play their final and inconsequential game of the IPL 2022 against Rajasthan Royals on May 20 at the Brabourne Stadium.
