Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar on Sunday said Ishan Kishan’s obvious shortcoming against short balls is certainly not a decent sign and that the Mumbai Indians hitter will be in a difficult situation on bouncy wickets in Australia and South Africa.

Gavaskar’s remarks came after Ishan Kishan was hit on the helmet by Dushmantha Chameera as soon as the second over of Mumbai Indian’s ineffective pursuit of 169 against Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in Match 37 of IPL 2022.

Here is a man who when the ball maybe even had hit the turf, he was not interested. He started to walk till the umpire told him ‘hang on, wait, let’s have a referral’. It’s just the mental situation he was in,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

Remarking on Ishan’s concerns with bouncers, he added: “I think he was shaken by the blow he got. Remember, previously, he had been hit on the head. It is certifiably not a decent sign since it implies, in places like Australia and South Africa where there is additional bob, he will resemble a rabbit trapped in the headlights.

“Every fast bowler is going to bang it short, nobody is going to pitch it where he likes, nothing is going to be below the waist. Anything above the waist, he is struggling at the moment.”

Prominently, Ishan was taken to the hospital during a T20I match against Sri Lanka recently after he was hit on the head by a bouncer from Lahiru Kumara.

The 23-year-old started very strong in IPL 2022, hitting two fifties on the run, yet has battled from that point onward, neglecting to satisfy the robust price of Rs 15.25 crore.
