Two-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have appointed Indian middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer as their new captain ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, which is expected to begin on March 27.

Shreyas Iyer was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction on Saturday, February 12 at Hotel ITC Gardenia in Bengaluru.

Kolkata Knight Riders were engaged in an intense bidding war with Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals to acquire the services of Shreyas Iyer and in the end, they won the battle against all the teams and bought the 27-year-old batsman for INR 12.25 crore.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, February 16, Kolkata Knight Riders confirmed that Iyer will be leading the team in the upcoming editions of the marquee T20 tournament.

The 27-year-old, who led Delhi Capitals to the final in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League, was not retained by Delhi Capitals ahead of the Indian Premier League 2022 mega auction.

Meanwhile, Iyer after being picked by Kolkata Knight Riders in the auction said that he is excited to be part of the galaxy of knights.

“KKR Family, super excited to be part of you all. I am looking forward to work in this season with all the teammates, management and the support staff. It’s gonna be an exciting one and looking forward to work with galaxy of knights,” Shreyas Iyer had said in a video shared by Kolkata Knight Riders on their official Twitter handle.
