The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have reportedly chosen their next captain for the upcoming IPL 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League and will confirm the name of South Africa’s Faf du Plessis on March 12.

RCB was left without a captain after Virat Kohli announced before the IPL 2021 edition that he will be stepping down as the leader after the tournament got over. Kohli, who has been with the franchise since 2008, took over as the captain of the side in 2013 from Daniel Vettori and led the team to the final of the tournament in IPL 2016.

Then Kohli ensured that the team qualified for the playoffs in the IPL 2020 and 2021 respectively after three consecutive bottom-placed outings in three seasons of the Indian Premier League. RCB’s worries for the next captain also compounded when AB de Villiers announced retirement from cricket before IPL 2022.

Glenn Maxwell Favorite To Become Captain, But RCB To Go With Faf Du Plessis: Reports

Meanwhile, RCB had retained just three players ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction in Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, and Mohammed Siraj. They then splurged INR 7 crores in buying Faf du Plessis in the auction and rumour floated that one of Maxwell and Du Plessis will become the new RCB captain.

Now all of this will be revealed and confirmed on March 12 as RCB has called for a press conference at 4 PM for the same.

Earlier, RCB was set to name the new captain on March 8, but now have decided to delay the announcement. In a tweet, the franchise has stated that they will be celebrating fourteen years of the team on March 12 at the Museum Cross Road in Church Street.

Maxwell’s name for captaincy has reportedly dropped from contention due to his absence in the first three matches in IPL 2022. Despite not being named in the limited-overs series against Pakistan, Cricket Australia has barred all centrally contracted players from competing in the IPL until April 5, which means that the NOC will only be applicable from April 6.

On the other hand, Du Plessis is a guaranteed starter and he will have his place sealed in RCB’s Playing XI as an opener as well, which will further open the door to take over the charge.
