Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting provided an update on the availability of the team’s overseas star players for their next game of IPL 2022. Delhi Capitals signed seven overseas players this season but they haven’t used their maximum allocation of foreign players in their playing XI in the first two matches of IPL 2022.

South African pacers Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi are with the squad but haven’t featured in any of the games for the Capitals. The Australian duo of Mitchell Marsh and David Warner won’t be available to play for the franchise until April 5 as the Australian men’s national team is currently playing against Pakistan in the limited-overs series.

IPL 2022: Michell Marsh was injured; David Warner and Anrich Nortje missed the first two games for Delhi Capitals

According to Cricket Australia rules, contracted players cannot participate in any domestic tournaments when the national team is playing international cricket. Marsh was ruled out of the Pakistan ODI series after suffering a hip flexor injury during a training session.

Reports suggested that the Australian all-rounder will continue his rehab process in India with Delhi Capitals physiotherapist Patrick Farhart. Nortje, who struggled with a hip injury in the last four months, was recently cleared of any serious injury and is still under rehab in the franchise’s camp. Farhat had visited South Africa last week to conduct his own assessment with the player.

IPL 2022: Anrich Nortje is hopefully available for selection for the LSG match: Ricky Ponting

Ponting was hopeful of Nortje and Warner being available for Delhi Capitals’ next game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 7 and expected Marsh to recover before their game against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 7.

“Nortje bowled 100% this morning in the warm-ups. I think he has to get through another maybe four or five-over spell at 100% capacity and then I think if he gets clearance from Cricket South Africa, he should be right to go. We have got a few more days before our next game, so hopefully, he is available for selection for that one,” Ponting said in the post-match press conference after DC’s defeat to Gujarat Titans on Saturday.

“I think David Warner has arrived in Mumbai. He left early yesterday morning I believe, so he should be there when we get back to Mumbai tonight. Mitchell Marsh has been in Mumbai for a few days, obviously getting his quarantine done. I think he might be out of quarantine tomorrow actually. We are hoping that he [Marsh] is gonna be available for the game on 10th,” he added.

DC lost to Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans by 14 runs on Saturday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
