Rajasthan Royals were the inaugural champions of the IPL. However, since then they have blown hot and cold in the cash-rich league. Heading into the IPL 2022 mega auction, they have made some interesting buys adding the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Trent Boult amongst others.

Over the years, they have had the likes of Steve Smith, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer playing for them. Archer was bought by Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2022 auction as the Royals were more than happy to look ahead of the England pacer. They too have invested in some players in the past with few or no returns for the franchise. In this article, we will take a look at the five most expensive players in the IPL.

Sanju Samson (8 Cr)

Samson has been a Royal for most of his IPL career. He was given captaincy duties in IPL 2021 and thus one of the three players to be retained by the franchise. He was picked up by Rajasthan Royals for 8 crores in 2018 after he played two seasons for Delhi Capitals with the Royals banned for match-fixing charges.

Prasidh Krishna (10 Cr)

The Indian pacer managed to impress the franchise who bagged him for 10 crores in the IPL 2022 mega auction. After playing for KKR in his initial years in the IPL, he made his debut for India and is now seen as one of the most promising options. There are talks of him being given a chance in red-ball cricket as well. Along with Trent Boult, Krishna is expected to make a fierce combination.

Jaydev Unadkat (11.5 Cr)

Unadkat was roped in by the Royals for 11.5 crores in IPL 2018 annd went for him again at 8.4 crores in IPL 2019 auction. In the IPL 2022 auction, the veteran Indian pacer was bagged by Mumbai Indians for a mere 1.5 crores. Among all the teams he has played in the IPL, he has picked the most wickets for Rajasthan Royals (29 in 39 games).

Ben Stokes (12.5 Cr)

Stokes was the Player of the Tournament in IPL 2017 playing for the Rising Pune Supergiants. This made Rajasthan Royals go big for him in the IPL 2018 auction. They managed to bag him for 12.5 crores. However, over the next few seasons, he did not produce his best for the franchise. He got injured in the India leg of IPL 2021 which eventually led him to miss out on the UAE leg. He then opted out of IPL 2022 to focus on his international career after England’s Ashes series loss.

Chris Morris (16.26 Cr)

Morris was the most expensive player in the IPL 2021 after Rajasthan Royals splashed 16.25 crores in the auction. It turned out to be a big mistake for the franchise as Morris was badly out of form for the franchise. He played 11 matches for the franchise scoring just 67 wickets. With the ball, he tried to make up as much as he could as he picked up 15 wickets, 14 of which came in the India leg of IPL 2021.
