IPL 2022: KS Bharat Is Not Just Seen As A Backup Wicket-Keeper To Rishabh Pant - Saba Karim

Srikar Bharat was bought by Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IPL 2022 mega auction and DC’s head of talent search, Saba Karim insisted that he wasn’t bought on board just as a backup wicketkeeping option to captain, Rishabh Pant.

As has been the case, DC once again invested in young players and Bharat is one of them. He played for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the previous season and had quite a few impactful innings at No.3.

“One must remember Bharat played at No.3 for RCB last year and did a very good job. He is expected to play a similar role here if needed. He is not seen just as a backup wicketkeeper to Pant.”

“We have gone for players who have multiple utility skills. Like most teams, we ensured our playing XI first and then went for backups. So, Bharat, Nagarkoti, Ngidi, and Mandeep all form part of the plan,” Karim said.

DC has a long list of developing youngsters and providing them with a platform in the IPL. They did it with Shreyas Iyer, who was in high demand in the auction and was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 12.25 crores.

Under head coach Ricky Ponting, the youngsters will have a great opportunity to express themselves and take the aggressive route which has been the norm in recent white-ball cricket.
