Kolkata Knight Riders will take on Mumbai Indians in a must-win game for them in match 56 of IPL 2022 to keep their playoff hopes alive. KKR beat Mumbai when the two teams met earlier in the season. Mumbai, on the other hand, will be looking to avenge their previous defeat.
KKR will be led by Shreyas Iyer, their newly appointed captain ahead of IPL 2022. He has scored nearly 350 runs so far but as a skipper gas failed to inspire his team to continuous victories. Mumbai will be led by the experienced Rohit Sharma who has a great track record against the Knights.
He has scored 1015 against KKR, the most by any batsman in the IPL so far. Though Mumbai has been knocked out of this season, the side has everything to play for and spoil KKR’s party.

KKR as a side has been very inconsistent with choosing their playing XI. Over 20 players have played in the 11 games that the Knights have so far. There are also talks of Tim Southee and Pat Cummins being played together along with KKR’s overseas constants Andre Russell and Sunil Narine. They might look to make the experiment go ahead in the last few games.
Given that the players have not performed continuously, the management has failed to bring out the best playing combination. In this article, we try and figure out what might be KKR’s playing XI against Mumbai Indians.

Venkatesh Iyer

Given that Aaron Finch and Baba Indrajith have failed to give the team good starts, Kolkata Knight Riders might go back to Venkatesh Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane as their specialist openers at the top. KKR are the only side in this IPL season who have not added a 50-run opening stand so far in the season.

Rahane played the first few games and was dropped from the playing XI. KKR’s highest opening stand came between Rahane and Venkatesh Iyer at the top. The veteran Indian player will look to contribute if he gives an opportunity.
Shreyas Iyer

Iyer is inching closer to 400 runs in the season. He has been the lone contributor with the bat for Kolkata Knight Riders. In the last couple of games, Nitish Rana and Rink Singh have come to KKR’s rescue in the middle-order.

Rana is a big part of KKR’s middle-order given the playing XI KKR has tried to keep in the last few games. He has notched up two fifty-plus scores in the season and is inching close to 300 runs in the season.
Rinku Singh

The left-hander has played a couple of handly cameos in the opportunities that he has been given. He came to his own in his knock of an unbeaten 42 against RR and took KKR home alongside Rana. Apart from his batting skills, he is a brilliant asset in the field.
Andre Russell

Russell will slot in at number six in the Kolkata Knight Riders playing XI. He has been underused with both bat and ball by skipper Shreyas Iyer so far. If KKR are to win all the matches, Russell needs to be given more time with the bat.
Sunil Narine

Narine has been economical as ever but has not been amongst the wickets for KKR. He has to be back to his wicket-taking form in the remaining matches for KKR. He has taken seven wickets so far in the season.
Pat Cummins

Cummins can make a comeback for KKR in the playing XI against Mumbai Indians. It was against this opponent that he hit the fastest IPL fifty. He will hope to get back into form against the same opponent with a handy contribution with both bat and ball.
Umesh Yadav

Umesh Yadav is the only KKR bowler in the list of top 10 wicket-takers. The veteran Indian pacer has taken 15 wickets and will look to add a few more in the remaining matches. He dismissed Rohit Sharma early when the two teams met earlier this season.
Tim Southee

Southee has played very few games in the season and has impressed with his bowling skills. In this game, Southee and Cummins playing together can definitely bolster the KKR bowling attack. The Kiwi pacer has taken 10 wickets in five games this season so far.
Shivam Mavi

Mavi will conclude a very different-looking KKR playing Xi against Mumbai Indians. This definitely covers all the bases and can challenge the five-time champions in the game.
