Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan hailed RCB all-rounder Glenn Maxwell for smart bowling against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Wednesday. RCB ended their losing streak with a 13-run victory over CSK on Wednesday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

On a surface that was slow and two-paced, RCB used their spinners, including Maxwell, very effectively. There wasn’t any presence of the dew-factor, but RCB captain Faf du Plessis deployed the spinners early in the innings to hold back Harshal Patel’s overs for the death.

Maxwell used the extra bounce to his benefit and dismissed Robin Uthappa and Ambati Rayudu in successive overs. Maxwell bowled a short and angled delivery, which Uthappa pouched to Suyash Prabhudesai at the backward point. The Australian off-spinner cleaned up Rayudu in the next over and subsequently finished at 2/22 from four overs.

The turning point in the bowling came through Maxwell: Irfan Pathan

Irfan said Maxwell bowled the best spell of his IPL career and credited the Australian for turning the match with stupendous bowling efforts.

“It was such a good four-over spell, there has not been a better spell in his (Maxwell’s) IPL career. It is the second time he has given 22 or fewer runs, gave 22 runs today and only once before this,” Irfan said on Star Sports.

“He kept on bowling in good areas, bowled with his brain, his control as the sixth bowler was extremely good. The turning point in the bowling came through Maxwell. You expect Harshal Patel, Hazlewood, or Hasaranga to come and give the crucial wickets but he (Maxwell) dismissed the two batters who play spin the best,” he added.

It was about bowling within the stumps and changing the seam angle: Glenn Maxwell on his bowling spell

Maxwell mentioned that he tried to change the seam angle and revealed how he ployed Uthappa’s dismissal in the very second ball of his spell.

“For me, it was about bowling within the stumps and changing the seam angle to try and get that variable spin. It helps that they had two lefties and I was able to spin the ball away. Just gives us another option with the ball at the back end as well,” Maxwell told the official broadcasters after the game.

“Shuts down one side of the ground [on bowling from round the wicket to the right-hander]. The Robin one if I do that from over the stumps, would have been more of a pull shot, which is his strength. To cramp him and not give room was key I guess,” he added.

RCB moved up in the top four of the points table while CSK are almost out of the tournament. RCB will play Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 8 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
