With Rs. 12.90 crore in their pockets, Delhi Capitals participated in IPL 2021 auction. The Shreyas Iyer-led team bought 8 players in the auction after spending Rs. 11.25 crore in the event. English all-rounder Tom Curran was Delhi Capitals’ biggest buy inviting Rs. 5.25 crore bid for himself.

Steve Smith was another big name that went to Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021 auction. Delhi managed to buy the Australian cricketer for 2.2 crores against his base price of Rs. 2 crores, after no other franchise showed great interest to buy the cricketer. Delhi were the runners-up in IPL 2020, losing the final game to Mumbai Indians. During IPL 2021 auction, DC bought five Indian players and three overseas players.

Ahead of IPL 2021 auction, Delhi released six players out of the team. These were Alex Carey, Keemo Paul, Tushar Deshpande, Sandeep Lamichhane, Mohit Sharma and Jason Roy. The list of retained players included Shreyas Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane, Amit Mishra, Avesh Khan, Axar Patel, Harshal Patel, Ishant Sharma, Kagiso Rabada, Prithvi Shaw, R Ashwin, Rishabh Pant, Shikhar Dhawan, Shimron Hetmyer, Marcus Stoinis, Lalit Yadav, Anrich Nortje, Daniel Sams, Pravin Dubey and Chris Woakes.

During IPL auctions 2021, Delhi went on to buy three overseas players namely Tom Curran, Steve Smith and Sam Billings. Among Indians players, Delhi invested money for Umesh Yadav, Ripal Patel, Vishnu Vinod, Lukman Hussain Meriwala and M Siddharth. Right-arm pacer Umesh Yadav was bought for Rs. 1 crore, while the other four cost Delhi Rs. 20 crore each.
