IPL 2021 commences next month with the first match between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. The match will be played at MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 9, 2021. 8 teams will play a total of 60 matches during IPL 2021. There are 6 venues that will host all the matches in IPL 2021. The tournament will conclude with the final match on May 30, 2021, at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmadabad.

Like every T20 league, the Indian Premier League observes a lot of big shots. Sixes carries a lot of value in the Indian Premier League as it helps teams to increase their run rates. Sixes are also considered as big achievements for players as they are awarded for hitting sixes in the Indian Premier League. One such award is the Maximum Sixes Award. The award is conferred to the player who hits the most sixes throughout the tournament. Over the years, many players have won the Maximum Sixes Award. Here we take a look at winners of maximum sixes awards in the history of the Indian Premier League.

IPL 2008 – Sanath Jayasuriya (31 Sixes)

In the debut IPL tournament in 2008, former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya won the maximum sixes award. The left-handed batsman smashed 31 sixes in the tournament, the most by any player.  Sanath Jayasuriya played for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2008. He played as an opener for the team throughout the season. In 14 matches, Jayasuriya scored 518 runs at an average of 43+. He hit 1 century and 2 half-centuries in IPL 2008. Along with 31 sixes, Jayasuriya also hit 58 fours in the tournament. He was also the 3rd highest run-scorer in the tournament.

IPL 2009- Adam Gilchrist (29 Sixes)

Adam Gilchrist won the maximum sixes award in IPL 2009 after he hit 29 sixes in the tournament. The former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist was captain of Deccan Chargers in IPL 2009. In 16 matches for his team, the left-handed batsman Gilchrist smashed 495 runs. This consisted of 3 half-centuries. Along with 31 sixes, the wicket-keeper batsman Gilchrist also smashed 54 fours in IPL 2009. He was also the 2nd highest run-scorer in the tournament. Under Adam Gilchrist’s leadership, Deccan Chargers won the trophy in IPL 2009.

IPL 2010- Robin Uthappa (27 Sixes)

Robin Uthappa won the maximum sixes award in IPL 2010. While playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, the right-handed batsman Uthappa smashed 27 sixes in IPL 2010. In 14 innings, Robin Uthappa smashed 374 runs along with 3 half-centuries. Along with 27 sixes, Uthappa also accounted for 21 fours in the tournament. He was the 11th highest run-scorer in the tournament.

Chris Gayle won the maximum sixes award in IPL 2011 after he smashed 44 sixes in the tournament with his aggressive batting. The West Indies southpaw played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2011. In 12 matches, Gayle scored 608 runs along with 3 fifties and 2 hundreds. He was also the highest run-scorer in the tournament and won the orange cap. Along with 44 sixes, Gayle also hit 57 fours in IPL 2011.

In IPL 2012, Chris Gayle won the maximum sixes award for the 2nd consecutive time. Gayle bettered his own previous record and smashed 59 sixes in IPL 2012. This is still the most number of sixes hit by a batsman in a single IPL tournament. In 14 innings, the left-handed batsman Gayle scored 733 runs at an average of 61+. He smashed 7 half-centuries and 1 century in IPL 2012. Gayle also won the orange cap as he was the highest run-scorer in IPL 2012. Along with 56 sixes, Gayle also hit 46 fours in IPL 2012.

In IPL 2013, Chris Gayle won the maximum sixes award for the 3rd consecutive time. This time, the West Indies cricketer hit 51 sixes in the tournament. Gayle was again part of Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2013. In 16 innings, he scored 708 runs at an average of 59. Gayle was the 2nd highest run-scorer in the tournament. Gayle also smashed 4 centuries and 1 century in IPL 2013. Along with 51 sixes, he also accounted for 57 fours.

IPL 2014- Glenn Maxwell (36 Sixes)

In IPL 2014, Glenn Maxwell won the maximum sixes awards after hitting 36 sixes in the tournament. The Australian cricketer was part of Punjab Kings (Kings XI Punjab) in the tournament. In 16 innings, Maxwell scored 552 runs at an average of 34.5. Maxwell was also the 3rd highest run-scorer in the tournament. The right-handed batsman Maxwell hit 4 fifties in IPL 2014. Along with most 36 sixes, Maxwell also accounted for 48 fours.

IPL 2015- Chris Gayle (38 Sixes)

In IPL 2015, Chris Gayle won his 4th maximum sixes award while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore. The West Indies cricketer Gayle smashed 38 sixes in the tournament. In 14 innings, Gayle scored 491 runs along with 2 fifties and 1 hundred. Gayle was the 6th highest run-scorer in IPL 2015. Along with 38 sixes, he also hit 39 fours.

IPL 2016- Virat Kohli (38 Sixes)

In IPL 2016, Virat Kohli won the maximum sixes award for hitting 38 sixes in the tournament. Virat Kohli was Royal Challengers Bangalore captain in IPL 2016. He played 16 innings and scored 973 runs. Kohli also won the orange cap as he was the highest run-scorer in the tournament. Kohli hit 7 fifties and 4 centuries in IPL 2016. Along with 38 sixes, Kohli also smashed 83 fours.

IPL 2017- Glenn Maxwell (26 Sixes)

Glenn Maxwell won the maximum sixes award in IPL 2016 while playing for Punjab Kings (Kings XI Punjab). Maxwell smashed 26 sixes in the tournament and it was the 2nd time that Maxwell won the maximum sixes award in IPL. In 13 innings, the Australian batsman Maxwell scored 310 runs at an average of 31. David Warner had also hit 26 sixes in the tournament but the award went to Glenn Maxwell. Warner won the orange cap in the tournament.

Rishabh Pant won the maximum sixes award in IPL 2018 while playing for Delhi Capitals. The wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant smashed 37 sixes in the tournament. In 14 innings, Pant scored 684 runs at an average of 54+. He was the 2nd highest run-scorer in IPL 2018. Pant also hit 5 half-centuries and 1 century in the tournament. Along with 37 sixes, Rishabh Pant also hit 68 fours in IPL 2018.

Andre Russell won the maximum sixes award in IPL 2019 after he smashed 52 sixes in the tournament. Russell was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the tournament. The West Indies all-rounder Russell smashed 510 runs in 13 innings in IPL 2019. He also hit 4 fifties in the tournament and was the 5th highest run-scorer. Along with 52 sixes, Russell also hit 31 fours in the tournament.

In IPL 2020, Mumbai Indians’ player Ishan Kishan won the maximum sixes award for hitting 30 sixes in the tournament. Kishan played 13 innings and scored 516 runs in IPL 2020. The left-handed batsman Kishan also smashed 4 half-centuries in the tournament. Overall, Kishan was the 5th highest run-scorer in IPL 2020. Along with 30 sixes, Kishan also hit 36 fours in the tournament.
