The 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is almost nearing its business end, and we have already a handful of nerve-wracking games. While it has been a life-changing tournament for many, few established their captaincy skills in the ongoing competition. Speaking on the current crop of skippers in the IPL, former Australian cricketer Brad Hogg admitted that Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Shreyas Iyer has impressed him the most.

The 24-year-old cricketer from Mumbai picked up the baton midway in IPL 2018 when Gautam Gambhir stepped down owing to poor results. In the last few games, Shreyas Iyer showed good match awareness and grabbed eyeballs of the cricket pundits. Under his leadership, Delhi also made rapid progress but failed to qualify for the playoffs. Come the new season, the franchise made an array of changes but stuck with Iyer as the captain. And now the decision is paying off as they are currently at the second spot in the points table after Chennai Super Kings.

Iyer has led from the front

Delhi Capitals, under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, has played as a unit as the results have followed. Iyer’s match reading abilities have been spot on and have backed players even if they were having a bad day in the business. Brad Hogg also heaped praise on Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy skills when quizzed about the best skipper in IPL so far. Hogg said Iyer has led the team both with the bat and as a skipper. He also credited the young skipper for Delhi Capitals’ impressive performance in this season.

Shreyas Iyer, there is no doubt about that. Delhi Capitals have been nowhere throughout the whole IPL in the previous editions. In this year they are at the top because a young man has taken the responsibility with both bat and leadership out in the field. He is making the right decisions with his bowlers, has led from the front and has taken ownership of that job,” said Hogg in a video posted on Twitter.

Delhi Capitals will next play Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on April 28 (Sunday) as the Shreyas Iyer-led side seeks to seal their playoff berth.
