Varun Chakravarthy was at the forefront of the demolition of the Royal Challengers Bangalore batting line-up helping the Kolkata Knight Riders gain an upper hand on Monday in Abu Dhabi. The mystery spinner finished with outstanding figures of 4-0-13-3 as Virat Kohli’s side were bowled out for 92 runs.

Varun Chakravarthy, who has recently made it into India’s T20 World Cup squad, opened the bowling and conceded just 4 runs in the first over. After the pacers had dismissed the top-order, he returned, in the 11th over, to break in through the middle-order.

He nipped out three wickets with the ball – Glenn Maxwell was bowled playing a slog; debutant Wanindu Hasaranga was given lbw on his first ball; Sachin Baby mistimed one to point – before running out Kyle Jamieson at the non-striker end after Harshal Patel played a straight drive.

Varun Chakravarthy has also previously been used at times in the death; his mystery element makes him difficult to be picked and hit by the batters.

The Tamil Nadu spinner said he is ready to do whatever role the management asks of him. He was also happy with the tight performance by the KKR bowling group.

“Kudos to the whole bowling unit, it was a very disciplined bowling performance. I’m happy to do whatever the coach and the captain want me to do, be it bowling the first over or come back later. We did work a lot even during the last phase, credit goes to the team management. The plan was to attack the stumps, the ball was doing a bit initially, now it has flattened, so we just stuck to our plans,” Varun Chakravarthy said.

RCB set KKR a taget of 93 runs

Virat Kohli’s decision to bat first backfired as his batters could never get going with the KKR bowlers continuously making breakthroughs, starting with the wicket of the skipper himself. Kohli was trapped lbw by Prasidh Krishna in the second over after he had punched the pacer for a gorgeous boundary in the covers.

Devdutt Padikkal and debutant Srikar Bharat tried to hold the innings before Lockie Ferguson, playing in place of Pat Cummins, dismissed the left-handed opener on the last ball of the powerplay. Russell got rid of Bharat with a short ball before yorking out AB de Villiers for a duck.

Varun Chakravarthy then dismantled the RCB batting line-up before Ferguson and Russell returned to finish things off.
