Shreevats Goswami, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s wicket-keeper batsman, says that while some players were dejected with David Warner’s axing as the skipper and from the eleven, it was quite fine for the other young domestic players.

After five losses in six games under David Warner, the SRH management put Kane Williamson at the helm for the rest of IPL 2021, which is now suspended, and dropped the opener for all-rounder Mohammad Nabi.

The decision was shocking considering David Warner’s brilliant record as a batsman – the southpaw is the leading run-scorer amongst overseas players in the IPL – and had previously led the Sunrisers to the title in 2016.

“Obviously, if you ask David or Kane or the management, there has to be a different angle to it. We as domestic players – especially me who hasn’t played a lot of games and hasn’t gotten involved too much in these decisions – it was quite ok for us,” Shreevats Goswami, who has been at SRH since 2018, told Cricket.com.

“Look, it didn’t really affect the players. I mean, it was a tough call on the management’s part but it wasn’t dropped on players. We were quite ok with the whole situation. Yes, there will be a bit of remorse in certain players with that decision but I think we were in good spirits and looking to contribute towards the team’s success in the remaining games,” he added.

David Warner was obviously shocked and disappointed: Tom Moody

SRH’s director of cricket, Tom Moody, had later revealed that the left-hander was “shocked” and “disappointed” on being told he would be snubbed as captain and player. Moody said they explained to David Warner that his axing was a result of balancing the eleven, which, not just this season but for the past few years, have been thin in the lower middle-order.

“It means firstly that he’s not going to be playing, purely a decision based on combination. We’ve come to a conclusion that the two overseas batters, allrounder and Rashid Khan is the best combination. We’ve looked at it closely. Bairstow’s form and Williamson’s form is at a great height and we are very thrilled the way they are playing,” Moody told Star Sports before the Sunrisers’ game against the Rajasthan Royals on Sunday.

“We had to make a hard call and someone had to miss out, and unfortunately for Davey, this time it’s him. He was obviously shocked and disappointed. And we’d be disappointed if he wasn’t feeling that way,” Moody added.
