IPL 2021: Last Two League Matches Between SRH,MI & RCB,DC To Be Played At The Same Time On October 8

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that the last two league matches of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) will be played concurrently on October 8 (Friday) at 7.30 PM in Abu Dhabi and Dubai respectively.

This has been done due to avoiding any favor to Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (MI). This is also because of the current positioning of both the teams on the points table. Mumbai Indians have played 10 games winning 4 and losing 6 and have 8 points. Their net run rate is extremely poor at -0.0551.

This means, Mumbai Indians, who are the two-time defending champions, having won the Indian Premier League trophy back-to-back in 2019, defeating the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final and then in 2020, defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) in the final, in UAE, need to win all the remaining four matches in the league stage to qualify for the playoffs.

Therefore, if the last two league matches are played at the same time, it will rule out any favor in terms of the Net Run Rate required to make their way in the playoffs.

The last two league matches will see Mumbai Indians taking on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)  at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. The other match will be Royal Challengers Bangalore clashing with Delhi Capitals at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

“In a first for the IPL, the last two league matches before the VIVO IPL 2021 Playoffs will be played concurrently. On the last day of the league stage (08.10.2021) of the ongoing season, instead of having one afternoon match and one evening match, two matches (SRH v MI and RCB v DC) will be played simultaneously at 7.30 PM IST (6.00 PM GST),” BCCI said in an official statement.

As of today, September 28, 2021, RCB has 6 wins from 10 matches and 12 points to their name with a net run rate of -0.359. Sunrisers Hyderabad has 2 wins from 10 matches and is out of the playoffs race, while Delhi Capitals are at the second spot on the points table with 8 wins from 11 matches and a net run rate of 0.562.
