Delhi Capitals assistant Mohammad Kaif rued regular captain Shreyas Iyer’s absence ahead of IPL 2021; however, he remains equally excited for Rishabh Pant. The franchise chose Rishabh Pant to lead the side as Shreyas Iyer will miss the tournament due to a shoulder injury. With Pant taking rapid strides in recent times, Mohammad Kaif backs him to do it further with the additional responsibility of captaincy.

The recent months have seen Rishabh Pant grow as a valuable cricketer for the Indian team as he has been a consistent performer in Tests. The swashbuckling left-handed batsman was also the fulcrum of India’s victories in the T20 and ODI series against England at home. Pant, who will lead a team for the first time in a high-profile tournament, revealed he feels privileged to do so and will give his best.

Mohammad Kaif took to his official Twitter handle and lamented Shreyas Iyer’s absence; however, he feels excited to see Rishabh Pant captain the side. Kaif believes that captaincy will allow the 23-year old keeper-batsman to take his game further forward and achieve a new level of consistency. Kaif, the assistant coach of the franchise, will team up with his colleague Ajay Ratra and head coach Ricky Ponting to lift the Capitals one step further from last year.

Below is Mohammad Kaif’s tweet:

The 2020 edition saw the Delhi Capitals reach the final for the first time; however, they lost to the Mumbai Indians comprehensively. Rishabh Pant had a modest tournament by his standards, scoring 343 runs in 14 games at 31.18, keeping a strike rate of 113.95. Pant will have the experience and the brains of seniors like Ravichandran Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane, Steve Smith to lift his team to the summit.
