Chennai Super Kings opener Ruturaj Gaikwad continued his sensational run in IPL 2021 with a marvellous hundred against Rajasthan Royals on Saturday in Abu Dhabi.
Gaikwad smashed an unbeaten 101 from 60 balls to help CSK put a score of 189/4 in the first innings. Gaikwad was great at finding the gaps, especially the cover region, with his smart footwork and played his knock in a calm and composed manner.
Gaikwad dispatched Mustafizur Rahman’s short-length delivery into the deep square leg for a six to register his maiden IPL hundred on the final ball of the innings.
Ruturaj Gaikwad is a natural talent: Salman Butt
Former Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt hailed Gaikwad for his temperament throughout his innings and especially at his selection of shots.
“Ruturaj Gaikwad is a natural talent. But the mental and technical development and the game awareness is outstanding as he absorbs the pressure during difficult phases. There are players if they don’t hit boundaries for 3-4 deliveries, they begin taking a risk or play reckless shots,” Salman Butt said on his YouTube channel.
“But Ruturaj Gaikwad is different as he puts away the bad balls and doesn’t come under pressure if otherwise. When set, he starts converting the aerial shots from grounded ones,” he added.
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s adaptability in this format with a proper technique is outstanding: Salman Butt
Gaikwad hammered nine fours and five sixes in his blistering knock at the strike rate of 168.33. The 24-year-old played an array of shots on the off-side with impeccable control on the movement of his foot.
Butt said Ruturaj plays the old school game with his orthodox shots rather than the modern-day batsman trying to play innovative shots.
“He is also beautiful to watch and old school as compared to most modern-day players. Gaikwad struck at 160 to 170, but he plays risk-free cricket. Hence, it’s a great quality for a batsman to have the temperament in a T20 game by respecting the good balls and playing your shots when set,” Salman Butt said.
“His adaptability in this format with a proper technique is outstanding and unlike most new players, Gaikwad plays proper cricketing shots,” he added.
However, Gaikwad’s century went in vain as Rajasthan Royals led by Yashasvi Jaiswal (50) and Shivam Dube (64*) completed the chase with 15 balls and seven wickets to spare.
