The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) registered a 6-wicket win over the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Thursday. With this victory, MS Dhoni’s side have assured themselves a playoff berth.

Chasing 135, Ruturaj Gaikwad started off in a brisk fashion, taking a four off Sandeep Sharma and hitting a six to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Faf du Plessis joined in the fun stroking a six off Kumar and a couple of fours off Jason Holder. Gaikwad then thumped Rashid Khan for a four and a maximum to cap off the powerplay at 47/0.

Du Plessis then harrumphed another pair of four and six off Siddarth Kaul in the 7th over. Gaikwad was then dismissed in the 11th over by Holder for 45 but by then the required run rate had come down to 6 runs-per-over.

Moeen Ali got off to a brisk start with a couple of boundaries but was bowled by Rashid Khan for run-a-ball 17. Holder return to dismiss Suresh Raina and du Plessis (41 off 36) giving CSK a scare. However, Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni made sure CSK go past the finishing line in the last over with Dhoni himself finishing off with a six.

Earlier, after being inserted into bat first, SRH lost Jason Roy early to Josh Hazlewood for a scratchy 7-ball 2. But Wriddhiman Saha played his shots with comfort against the CSK pacers, whacking Deepak Chahar for a couple of maximums during the powerplay.

Soon after, Kane Williamson was trapped lbw by Dwayne Bravo for a run-a-ball 11; the West Indian also accounted for Priyam Garg with a short delivery. Fall of wickets at the other end slowed down Saha, who eventually fell to Ravindra Jadeja after scoring 44 off 46 balls.

Young batters Abhishek Sharma and Abdul Samad hit a four and a six each before both, after scoring 18 runs each, succumbed to Hazlewood in the 17th over; the Australian pace returned with his best IPL figures of 3/24.

In the 19th over, Holder holed out in the deep to a good catch from Chahar for 5 runs to the bowling of Shardul Thakur. Rashid Khan’s 17-run knock, which included a couple of boundaries, helped SRH trudge over 130.

Twitter was buzzing in praise for Dhoni’s side for qualifying for the playoffs after missing it last season.
