The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) move to the top of the points table with the win of Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday in Dubai in the first match of the second leg of IPL 2021. CSK registered a victory by 20 runs after having put 156 on the board despite being 24-4 at one stage.

Ruturaj Gaikwad top-scored with 88 while the pacers troubled the MI batters who found scoring difficult on a fairly good surface.

Quinton de Kock and Anmolpreet Singh started the chase with a flurry of boundaries before Deepak Chahar trapped the former lbw and bowled the latter. Shardul Thakur sent back the in-form Suryakumar Yadav in his first over, the sixth of MI’s innings.

Dwayne Bravo broke the pair of Ishan Kishan and Saurabh Tiwary with the former’s wicket. Kieron Pollard, the stand-in captain for MI, kept the hopes alive with a boundary and a six before Josh Hazlewood trapped him in front of the sticks. Krunal Pandya ran himself out ending effectively ending MI’s challenge despite Tiwary’s lone battle at the other end.

Earlier in the game, MS Dhoni’s decision of batting first after winning the toss backfired as the New Zealand pair of Trent Boult and Adam Milne broke down the CSK top-order with two strikes each in the powerplay leaving them reeling at 24/4, effectively 5 down with Ambati Rayudu retired hurt.

Boult accounted for wickets of Faf du Plessis and Suresh Raina while the right-arm speedster got rid of Moeen Ali and MS Dhoni. Milne hit Rayudu on his elbow forcing the batsman to retire hurt himself.

Jasprit Bumrah, who didn’t take the new ball, deceived Jadeja and Bravo. Mumbai, who are without Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya, had a big task at their hand.

On the other end, Gaikwad started slowly and then gradually took off as he hit a brilliant fifty. The CSK opener finished with 88 runs off 58 balls with the help of 9 fours and 4 superb sixes.

Gaikwad got the support of Ravindra Jadeja and then from Dwayne Bravo who smashed 23 runs from 8 balls before the opener capped off the innings with an incredible six off Bumrah over deep square leg shifting the momentum CSK’s way.
