IPL 2021 takes a countdown as the tournament will start in less than two weeks. The 14th edition of the Indian Premier League commences with the first game between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians on April 9, 2021. The match will be played at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. After nearly a gap of two years, IPL returns to India. A total of 6 venues are set to host all the matches in IPL 2021, and teams are deprived of the home advantage during the tournament.

In the game of cricket, controversies are something that are bound to happen due to the numerous rules of the games. Even some dismissals in cricket become a matter of controversies sometimes as even umpires are confused over the decision. Sometimes, on-field umpires consult the third umpire and even the latter commits a mistake in making a decision. Yusuf Pathan Declared Out For Obstructing The Field In IPL 2013

A controversial dismissal in IPL came long back in IPL 2013 when Yusuf Pathan was declared out for obstructing the field. The incident occurred during Pune Warriors India vs Kolkata Knight Riders match in IPL 2013. Playing for Kolkata Knight Riders, Yusuf Pathan was batting at 72 runs off 44 balls.

In the 18th over of Wayne Parnell, Pathan hit the ball and tried to sneak a single. The ball only reached the middle of the pitch. Parnell tried to collect the ball but Pathan pushed the ball from his legs while running to the non-striker’s end. Pathan pleaded to be innocent but opposition players appealed to the umpires for obstructing the field. Later, Yusuf Pathan was given out for obstructing the field. However, the incident gave rise to many arguments.

Another incident of obstructing the field occurred in IPL 2019. During Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Delhi Capitals Eliminator match, Amit Mishra was given out for obstructing the field. Delhi Capitals were chasing 163 in the match. During the final over, Delhi Capitals needed 2 runs off 3 balls with Amit Mishra on strike. Mishra missed the 4th ball of the over but tried to take a single. Wicket-keeper threw the to bowler Khaleel Ahmed who tried to run-out Amit Mishra.

However, Amit Mishra changed his direction of running and started running in front of the wicket. This way, Khaleel Ahmed’s throw hit Mishra on his arm. Sunrisers Hyderabad appealed to the umpire for Amit Mishra obstructing the field. When the third umpire took a look at replays, he found Amit Mishra guilty of obstructing the field and gave him out.

David Warner Given Out Caught In IPL 2020

In the last season in IPL 2020, David Warner’s one dismissal became a point of controversy. During the Eliminator match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad, the latter were chasing 132 runs. David Warner was on the strike and Mohammad Siraj’s one delivery passed through his bat and legs. Wicketkeeper AB de Villiers caught the ball and appealed for a dismissal.

The ball touched either David Warner’s glove or trousers but it wasn’t clear. The on-field umpire called not out decision. However, Royal Challengers Bangalore took a DRS over the decision. While going through the replays, the third umpire did not find any conclusive evidence of the ball hitting the bat or gloves, however, he overturned the on-field umpire’s decision and declared David Warner as out.

During Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings match in IPL 2019, MS Dhoni’s run-out decision became a matter of controversy. In the 13th over, MS Dhoni tried to take a single after an overthrow. However, Ishan Kishan hit the stumps and MS Dhoni came into trouble. The third umpire had a thorough look at the replays and he found MS Dhoni short of the crease. However, in one of the camera angles, MS Dhoni’s bat seemed to be inside the crease when the ball hit the stumps. After MS Dhoni was given out, there was a lot of controversy over the decision.

This is by far the most controversial dismissal in the Indian Premier League. Ravichandran Ashwin mankaded Jos Buttler in IPL 2019. During the Rajasthan Royals vs Punjab Kings match in IPL 2019, Ravichandran Ashwin stopped midway during his run-up and mankaded Jos Butter. Ashwin removed the bails and appealed for a run-out as Jos Buttler was out of the crease.

Since this is a legal form of dismissal in cricket, the on-field umpires accepted Ravichandran Ashwin’s appeal and declared Jos Buttler run-out. The incident invited mixed responses from people. While some criticized Ashwin for not showing sportsmanship, others backed his action as it is a legal way of dismissing a non-striker in cricket.
