Former Indian player Dilip Vengsarkar questioned about ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s exclusion from the Indian team in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

India recorded back to back losses in their opening two games against Pakistan and New Zealand. On both occasions, Ashwin, whose selection in the Indian squad was a surprise, didn’t feature in the playing XI.

Why do you pick Ravichandran Ashwin then?: Dilip Vengsarkar

Ashwin wasn’t played in a single Test match against England, and Vengsarkar asked why do the selectors pick the Tamil Nadu player when they want to warm him on the bench.

“Why is Ashwin being dropped for so long? It is a matter of investigation. Across formats he is your best spinner with more than 600 international wickets. He is your senior most spinner and you don’t pick him,” Vengsarkar told news agency PTI.

“I fail to understand. He didn’t play a single game in the England Test series also. Why do you pick him then? It is a mystery to me,” he added.

It was quite a lacklustre performance: Dilip Vengsarkar on India’s match against New Zealand

India’s difficulty to bat first in UAE, once again haunted them as they could register a paltry score of 110/7 against New Zealand on Sunday.

Ishan Kishan paired with KL Rahul in the opening slot with Rohit Sharma batting at No.3. However, the change didn’t go well for the team as Ishan got out for four runs, and Rohit could add just 14 runs before being dismissed to Ish Sodhi.

Sodhi also claimed the wicket of Indian skipper Virat Kohli after denying him singles to put him under pressure.

Vengsarkar called India’s performance as lacklustre and asked the players to be more energetic.

The team looked off coloured and the players looked jaded. I don’t know if it is the bio bubble fatigue or something else, I have not seen such body language in the players in a long time,” Vengsarkar said.

“It was quite a lacklustre performance, be it in batting or bowling. This format demands you to be energetic from ball one,” he added.
