Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer has praised Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni for leading his team to the final of the Indian Premier League 2023. Jaffer, in an interview with Sportskeeda ahead of the CSK vs GT final, expressed his surprise at the success of CSK despite initially doubting their chances.
Jaffer credited Dhoni for his simple yet effective planning, highlighting the stability of the CSK squad throughout the tournament. He admitted that when the IPL 2023 began, Chennai Super KingsK did not appear to be a team that would finish at the top.
“His planning is simple. We don’t see too many changes in their side. Maximum credit goes to MS Dhoni. To be honest, CSK did not look like a team that would have finished at the top,” Jaffer commented.
Although Chennai Super Kings started the campaign with two consecutive losses, they steadily improved as the tournament progressed. Dhoni’s side showcased their depth and resilience, with various players stepping up and delivering crucial performances. Finishing in the top two positions in the league stage, Chennai Super Kings then defeated the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 to secure their spot in the final.
“In the beginning, it looked like their bowlers would struggle to make an impact outside Chennai. But still, they finished second in the points table. That is MS Dhoni’s magic,” Jaffer acknowledged.

Gujarat Titans Were Overconfident Against Chennai Super Kings In Qualifier 1: Wasim Jaffer
Jaffer recognized that defeating the Gujarat Titans at their home ground is a challenging task due to their familiarity with the conditions. He acknowledged that the Titans have a strong team with better options, including quality spin bowlers and batting depth.
Jaffer believed that if the Titans stick to their original plan and revert to their successful template, with Hardik Pandya bowling and Sai Sudharsan in the lineup, they have a slight advantage in the final.
“Gujarat Titans have better options. They have two very good spin bowlers, have more depth in batting and will play at home. I felt Gujarat Titans became a little overconfident in Qualifier 1, but they reverted to their old template, with Hardik Pandya bowling and Sai Sudharsan. If they follow that template, GT have a slight edge tonight,” Jaffer concluded.
As CSK and GT prepare to face each other in the IPL 2023 final, both teams will be eager to showcase their skills and claim the coveted title. The clash promises to be an intense battle between CSK’s well-planned approach and GT’s strong lineup, making it an exciting contest for fans.
