Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting believes that his side’s lackluster fielding effort against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), especially dropping Kyle Mayers for cheap, might have lost DC the work.

After starting the innings slow, scoring 30 runs in the powerplay, Mayers produced an easy catch for Khaleel Ahmed in the 3rd over, when the West Indian was on 14-off-15. Ahmed dropped an absolute sitter, following which Kyle Mayers scored 59 in his next 23 balls, taking his side to 193/6 in 20 overs.

“To be totally honest, I think they got more runs than they probably should have. I don’t think we helped ourselves in the field today. Our fielding after the first four overs was really sloppy… A couple of chances went down, a few misfields. One of those chances that went down was Mayers’, who ended up going on a bit of a run after that, which put us behind the game a little bit.”

Ricky Ponting also critiques DC’s bowling against LSG says it was not a 190+ pitch

DC’s bowling line-up was under fire too when head coach Ricky Ponting criticized how expensive their attack was at times, and that the pitch was not one where teams score 190+.

Kyle Mayers’ 73-off-38 were not the only trouble for Delhi bowlers, as the likes of Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran striking the ball resulted in LSG hitting 16 sixes in their innings.

I think we conceded 16 sixes in our bowling innings. That goes to show that we were a fair bit off with our execution with our bowling. Whenever you’re giving up 16 sixes, and there’s only five fours, which is quite remarkable. So, whenever you’re giving up that many, it’s going to be hard to drag yourself back into the game. Looking at the wicket today, I didn’t think it was a 190-plus wicket. There was a lot of dew there. If anything, on that wicket, it was probably better for us batting second,” said Ponting.

Ricky Ponting and Delhi Capitals will be looking to improve upon their 5th-place finish in IPL 2022. Despite not getting off to a good start, they have their next match against defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT).
