Delhi Capitals‘ (DC) IPL 2023 season didn’t get off to a good start, as they were thumped by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). However, Rilee Rossouw found a silver lining in the otherwise disappointing night, getting to bat with David Warner.
Warner will captain the Delhi-based franchise this season in the absence of the side’s regular captain Rishabh Pant. Who was in a horrific car crash last December and has been indefinitely sidelined.

In their opening match against LSG, the Capitals conceded 193 runs in the first innings and never looked like they were in the match while chasing. Warner (56) and Rossouw (30) were DC’s highest run scorers. They even put together a partnership of 38 runs.

When asked about getting to bat with David Warner for a press release, the South African had this to say –
IPL 2023 | India National Cricket Team | Chennai Super Kings (CSK) | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Gujarat Titans (GT) | Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) | Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) | Mumbai Indians (MI) | Punjab Kings (PBKS) | Rajasthan Royals (RR) | Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) | SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH)
“It was fantastic to bat with a legend of the game. And to see how he goes about his business was something to behold.”
After a big loss in their opening match, Rossouw acknowledged that his team needs to make significant improvements going forward.
“It’s a long tournament and we’ll definitely think about what we could’ve done better. We’ll strive to get a victory in the next one. We can be better on the field. It would’ve been a completely different game if we had taken our chances,” he said.
David Warner admits that the new ‘Impact Player’ rule “Can be quite confusing”
Delhi Capitals captain David Warner has shared his thoughts on IPL’s new ‘Impact Player rule, saying it can be confusing and stressful for players.
The rule, introduced in IPL 2023, sees each team prepare a 5 player bench before the match. At any point in the match, one of these can be substituted for a player in the Playing XI, calling the incoming substitute an ‘Impact Player’.
In their first match against LSG, Delhi removed bowler Khaleel Ahmed to bring in all-rounder Aman Khan during the inning break. It did not matter much, as Khan only scored 4 runs.
When asked about the new rule in the post-match press conference, Warner had this to say –
“It can be quite confusing, maybe stressful at times (impact player). But it’s a welcome addition to the tournament. Either it’s a batter more or bowler more.”
Having lost their first match by a big margin, David Warner and DC will be looking to get their campaign on track with a win at their first home game, against defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT).
