LSG had a settled opening pair with KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock. They needed a good quality middle-order batter an overseas pacer as a backup for Mark Wood and a few all-rounders. They built their squad on all-rounders in their debut season and this season as well, they kept the same template.Â
Among the players they released were Jason Holder, Andrew Tye, Manish Pandey, Evin Lewis, Dushmanta Chameera, and Shahbaz Nadeem. Having released the likes of Pandey and Lewis, LSG needed top-order batters in the auction. They also needed a replacement for Jason Holder who was their premier all-rounder last season.Â

IPL 2023: 3 Worst Buys By Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) In The Auction
Nicholas PooranÂ
Lucknow went all out behind Nicholas Pooran trusting his immense potential and talent. He scored 353 runs for Punjab Kings in IPL 2020 and last year for SRH he scored 306 in 14 games. LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir was very vocal of his potential after the auction. However, teams run a risk-reward formula with him and thus it all depends on the day for the southpaw. LSG paid 16 crores to rope him in and a bad season would dearly cost the franchise. In those terms, he is always a risky buy.
