IPL 2023 Auction: 3 Players Mumbai Indians Can Target

The IPL 2023 auction will be held in Kochi on December 16 with several players going under the hammer. Each of the 10 teams will by then figure out exactly the players they would want in their respective team. In addition to their remaining purse, each team will be given an additional five crores to spend this year. As per a BCCI official, the overall purse will be between 90-95 crores.

The teams have been asked to submit the list of players the franchises are willing to release by November 15 by the BCCI. All the teams are expected to release the list of extra or unused players so that they can go into the IPL 2023 auction looking to fill the gaps.

Mumbai Indians, the five-time IPL champions surprisingly finished last in IPL 2022 losing four games and winning just 10. Nothing seemed to go work for Rohit Sharma‘s team. Rohit as the skipper himself was not in good form. he finished the season with just 268 runs in 14 matches with no fifty-plus scores. His lack of form showed in his captaincy as well as he was not able to take any tough calls.

Heading into a new season, the think-tank would have identified the players they would target in the upcoming auction. In this article, we take a look at three players Mumbai Indians might target in IPL 2023.

1) Jonny Bairstow

The opening partnership was a real struggle for Mumbai Indians last year. The openers used to get dismissed very early with the middle-order needing to take on the pressure. Heading into this IPL season, Rohit Jonny Bairstow should be an ideal foil for Rohit Sharma. Bairstow plays with an attacking approach which will allow Rohit to take his time.

After playing initially for Sunrises Hyderabad and scoring over 1000 runs in four seasons, Bairstow joined Punjab Kings and scored 253 runs in 11 matches last year. If Punjab releases Bairstow, Mumbai should go for him. He missed the T20 World Cup due to a freakish injury at the golf course but is expected to be fit by the time IPL starts.

2) Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes has expressed his interest in featuring in the IPL 2023 auction as per reports. The England all-rounder skipped IPL 2022 to concentrate on Test cricket. He played just one match in IPL 2021 and was ruled out of the after picking up an injury. Mumbai will have an eye on him if he throws his name into the auction pool Alongside Kieron Pollard, if they can rope in Stokes, it would all the more strengthen their middle order.

Stokes is among the best all-rounders in the world having played previously in the IPL as well. He has played for Rising Pune Super Giants and Rajasthan Royals in the IPL previously. So far in the IPL, the southpaw has played 43 games scored 920 runs, and picked up 28 wickets.

3) Cameron Green

Cameron Green is among the few overseas all-rounders expected to be available for the IPL 2023 auction. Green recently showed his prowess as an opener in the T20I series against India just before the T209 World Cup. He has shown good signs of being an opener and was a late entrant in the T20 World Cup as well as a replacement for the injured Josh Inglish.

This will be Green’s maiden IPL season and there are reports that various franchises are keeping a close eye on him to get him booked. He has played all formats for Australia and has been very flexible with the recent role of an opener. Alongside Bairstow, Green also gives Rohit Sharma another option as an opener.
