IPL 2023: Chennai Super Kings Will Require A Long-Term Skipper If The IPL 2023 Season Is MS Dhoni's Last: Pragyan Ojha

Pragyan Ojha, a former India spinner, predicts that if MS Dhoni decides to retire after the upcoming IPL season, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will start scouting for a replacement.

The player retention list for the ten teams has been released ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 auction. While certain teams have released some of their key players, others have kept their core players.

The four-time IPL champions CSK of Dhoni were disqualified from the playoff round of the league last year. Despite being selected as Dhoni’s ideal replacement, all-arounder Ravindra Jadeja decided to resign as captain after CSK’s poor league performance the previous year. Six of their eight league games last year were losses for the Jadeja-led CSK.

Dhoni was reinstalled as the captain of the Yellow Brigade after Jadeja chose to step down from that position in order to concentrate more on his own performance.

Notably, Dwayne Bravo and CSK broke off their highly successful 11-year association. Along with Bravo, CSK has also decided to let go of England’s death-overs specialist Chris Jordan, a move that might surprise some.

When discussing Dhoni’s relationship with the team, former India player Pragyan Ojha noted that selecting Dhoni’s replacement as captain could be challenging for the four-time champions.

“There can’t be another captain while MS Dhoni is on the field. It became very clearer last year. Having said that, if you had asked me a year ago, I would have answered Kane Williamson, but knowing CSK, if this is MS Dhoni’s final year, they will want to hand on the captaincy to someone who can do the job for the next 5-6 years and gives stability to the squad” Pragyan Ojha said.

The IPL 2023 auction will be held in Kochi on December 23.
