The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) could be the last season for legendary captain MS Dhoni, who is expected to sign off from the cash-rich league at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has opened up about MS Dhoni’s retirement and said that the former Indian skipper will hang up his boots in the upcoming season.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is one of the most successful captains in IPL history, having led the franchise to the title four times in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021. The 41-year-old announced his retirement from the captaincy before the start of the 2020 season. However, he was forced to take up the leadership role in the middle of the tournament after Ravindra Jadeja resigned from the captaincy.

Dhoni Wanted To Retire In Front Of CSK Fans – Harbhajan Singh

During a discussion on SportsYaari, Harbhajan Singh said that MS Dhoni will suddenly announce his retirement from the IPL as he did in Test cricket in 2014.

“See, he is MS Dhoni. Whatever he does, it will be very different. If he is going to leave, he will do it very suddenly. We saw how he left India’s Test captaincy in the same fashion,” Harbhajan told SportsYaari.

“But he always wanted to finish his career in front of CSK fans. That’s very close to him. He wanted to retire in front of them, and that’s a great thing that he thinks of the fans,” Harbhajan added.

The upcoming edition of the IPL will be played between April and May and in a home-away format for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. The Super Kings will start their campaign against the defending champion Gujarat Titans on March 31 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The MS Dhoni-led team will play their first home match at the Chepauk on April 3 against the Super Giants.
