It was announced last December that the ‘Impact Player’ rule will be introduced to IPL 2023. While there has been a lot of discourse regarding the new rule, the Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach recently discussed how he sees the rule changing the game drastically.
The Impact Player rule will see each team submit a list of 4 substitute players before the match. At any point in the two innings, any one player from the playing XI can be substituted for one of the players on the list, making the player coming in an ‘Impact Player. Teams might use this to add another batsman or bowler to the team if the opportunity arises.

DC captain Ricky Ponting has now shared his two cents about the new rule. The former Australian captain opined that the introduction of Impact Players to cricket will negate the need for “bits and pieces” all-rounders in the game, as rather than having a player who could bat and bowl in the side, teams could just use an extra specialist batter or bowler instead.
“[Usage of Impact Player] depends if you bat or bowl first, so at the toss, we will be putting in a bowling-first team and a batting-first team. And obviously if you bat first, you’re probably going to sub in a batter. Or if you bat first and lose an early wicket, you might want to bring in a batter straight on top of that. So there are a number of different ways to use it. It actually almost negates the role of allrounders in the game now. So unless they’re absolutely world-class and they’re getting picked either as a batsman or as a bowler, not sort of a bits and pieces guy” said Ponting.

All-rounder Mitchell Marsh is an important piece of the puzzle for DC’s success in IPL 2023. Although, it is unlikely that he will lose his significance to the team by the Impact Player rule, seeing his batting performance for Australia against India in the recent ODI series.
Ricky Ponting laments Rishabh Pant’s loss for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023
Delhi Capitals’ regular captain Rishabh Pant will not be a part of IPL 2023 due to his horrific car accident in December 2022. Although he walked away with no major injuries, he did suffer multiple injuries in his back, foot, and head. Suffice it to say that he will not be a part of the Delhi Capitals in the upcoming season.
DC’s head coach Ricky Ponting recently lamented the loss of Pant for the team this year, and how important he is to the side as a captain, batsman, and wicketkeeper.
“Pant is a huge loss and it doesn’t matter who we bring in as we are still going to miss Rishabh. I am not going to joke or try and gloss over that fact and he is one of the best players in the world in three formats of the game,” he said.
In Pant’s absence, David Warner will take the reigns of captaincy for the Delhi franchise in IPL 2023.
