Devon Conway has clarified his statement after facing backlash from New Zealand fans over his comments following Chennai Super Kings’ victory in the IPL 2023 final. The Black Caps’ supporters can now breathe easy, as Conway revealed that he didn’t mean to label the win as the “biggest victory” of his career.

After his crucial knock of 47 runs from 25 balls in the final, Devon Conway initially referred to the win as the “biggest victory of my career.” However, he later clarified his statement, stating that it was the “best T20 victory of my career” and not the overall best. He acknowledged that winning the World Test Championship with the Black Caps in 2021 was a truly special moment for him.

Devon Conway’s outstanding performance throughout the IPL season for the Chennai Super Kings under the guidance of coach Stephen Fleming garnered much attention.

“I think it’s the best T20 victory of my career, I wouldn’t say it’s overall my best. But certainly best T20 victory or achievement in my career. I think the test championship final, winning that for New Zealand was certainly very, very special.”

He finished as the third-highest run-scorer of the season, accumulating 626 runs at an average of 51.69 and a strike rate of 139.70. He scored six half-centuries and registered the highest score of 92 not out in 15 innings.

“It was a great experience, I was fortunate enough to get a few games towards the back end of the IPL last year, so I got a taste of what it’s like, what the pressure is like, what the team expects of me as a player batting in the top order. Getting that backing [to open] from the first game throughout this campaign certainly helped me put my best foot forward and create momentum throughout the tournament.”

With the IPL season concluded, Devon Conway is set to return home to Wellington and take a month off to rest.
