With IPL 2023 being less than a week away, Delhi Capitals (DC) Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly opened up about how his side is missing their regular captain and wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant.

Pant was involved in a horrific car crash in December 2022. He was rescued by good samaritans present at the scene. Miraculously, he survived the incident. But the keeper-batsman did suffer multiple injuries on his back, foot, and head. Suffice it to say that he will not partake in IPL 2023, or any cricket in the foreseeable future.

The explosive batter was handed the captaincy of DC in 2021. He took the side to playoffs in that season.

Discussing Pant’s absence in 2023 in a video posted on DC’s Twitter, Sourav Ganguly discussed how the 25-year-old is essential to the Capitals, but he must heal completely before making a return.

“Anybody would miss Rishabh Pant. I’m sure the national team is missing him as well, but it’s unfortunate what’s happened. He’s young, so he’s got a lot of time left in his career. He’s a special player, I’ve always said he’s a special player and I’ve not hidden that. And I wish he comes back, whatever time it takes. But he must heal properly and come back. There’s no hurry,” said Sourav Ganguly.

Sourav Ganguly lauds DC’s youngsters, says they are looking good but need match time

Delhi Capitals have a decent crop of young Indian players at their disposal, and Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly claims they are looking good.

Delhi retained many of their young players bought in 2022. Former India U-19 batsman and captain Yash Dhull, and 23-year-old pacer Kamlesh Nagarkoti lead the charge for DC’s young brigade. While capped players like Chetan Sakariya, Prithvi Shaw, and Khaleel Ahmed can still be considered young.

Speaking on how the young players are holding up, Ganguly claimed that they are looking good, but need some match practice.

“They’re looking good actually, and they need match time which is more important. Nets are good but match is most important. They’ve been with me before the start of this camp, so I’ve worked with them there. Now obviously, I have joined with them from the 20th and it’s been good so far. We still have a week, but we want to get into match mode,” said Sourav Ganguly.

After missing out on playoffs this year, DC, under David Warner, will be looking to make the top-4 or win their first-ever tournament. Delhi Capitals will start their IPL 2023 campaign on Saturday, April 1 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
